Outcast A boy sat alone at recess watching others play He wanted to play basketball or football He wanted to have friends He wanted to be noticed by all the popular kids Instead of sitting on sidelines watching A still stone who'd amount to nothing No one ever thought of him Didn't recognize his existence Waste of space and breath, Time and money . It wasn't that kids made fun of him Just that no one took time to say "hello" Never making the small efforts that go a long way Cold wind raked rough fingers through his hair But not as cold as the engulfing loneliness Athletes dunking constantly glancing to see who's watching them Jump-roping girls chattering like squirrels Cliques merging at imaginary line only to separate to spread their gossip He'd seen the routine Glory-seekers march forth trying to gather every ounce of attention Until rejected by those suppose to be impressed He had often tried To be like them Lining up for the picks at basketball The captains forgot he was there Looking for a "group" he might take after He was little more than a shadow anger, sadness, loneliness Horrible emotions to live through Chocking his seed in the soil - Joseph Workman
